Fuel permit validityOne trip into or through the state (it expires when the vehicle leaves South Dakota)

The fuel permit must be obtained before entering the state, and the single-trip commercial permit is only valid if the vehicle also carries another form of licence.

Do you need a South Dakota trip or fuel permit?

Your truck needs a temporary trip permit for South Dakota when its plates are not apportioned (IRP) for South Dakota, and a temporary fuel permit when it has no IFTA licence. The fuel permit applies when the total weight or the registered weight is over 11,797 kg (26,000 lb), or when the truck or tractor has more than 2 axles; the weight that triggers a trip permit can differ by state. You can order the two permits together or separately.
