Texas trip & fuel permit rules

Trip permit validity72 hours or 144 hours
Fuel permit validityOne entry, up to 20 days from the date of entry

A fuel trip permit covers a single entry (a round trip counts as two), and carriers entering Texas more than five times a calendar year must get an IFTA or interstate trucker licence.

Do you need a Texas trip or fuel permit?

Your truck needs a temporary trip permit for Texas when its plates are not apportioned (IRP) for Texas, and a temporary fuel permit when it has no IFTA licence. The fuel permit applies when the total weight or the registered weight is over 11,797 kg (26,000 lb), or when the truck or tractor has more than 2 axles; the weight that triggers a trip permit can differ by state. You can order the two permits together or separately.
